Work > The Corps of Discovery

The content of the work in this exhibition is based on memories of my early grade school years. This was a time when I was preoccupied with the tasks of discovery, identification and assimilation.

In the summers of those years my family and I would go camping in the mountains close by our home. Quite often our campsites would be very near to (if not the same as) the locations visited by Captains Lewis and Clark in the first decade of the 1800’s.

I approach my work, even as I did as a child, in the spirit of an explorer. My job then and now has been to search in and document my world, and then to make it enticing and accessible. It was mostly physical then, but more psychological now.

The similarities between the journeys of The Corps of Discovery and the exploration of my memories of those years were the inspiration for this show. I have focused on bringing (at least) some small part of their methodology into these images.
